Sensory trail

Welcome!

Work your way step by step through all stations to discover your unique senses. Here we explore taste, smell, and vision, which may greatly influence your food liking.

The sensory trail is a cooperation between HVLL and LLUI.

Station 1

Are you a taster?

Your taste profile is based on your genetic makeup. Did you know that some people cannot taste certain flavours?

Station 2

The six tastes

Sweet, sour, bitter, salty, more recently umami, and even more recently fatty have been defined as human tastes. Your ability to identify taste and how much you enjoy them is influenced by both environmental and genetics factors.

Station 3

Do you love or hate it?

Differences in your perception of coriander are influenced by your scent.

Station 4

Smell identification

Simple smell identification tests can allow us to understand the functionality of your olfactory system. Similar tests are used in the diagnosis of disease.

Station 5

The genetics of scent

A single scent can be perceived completely differently person to person. Multiple genes have been identified that influence these differences.

Station 6

Vision

Your vision highly influences your food perception, do you know how?

Station 7

Genetic & vision

Your ability to differentiate between colours can be influenced by your genetics.
